Where Are All the Amazon Warehouses?
Based in Seattle, Washington, Amazon is a highly successful, multinational technology company with a focus on a number of sectors and industries, including cloud computing, digital streaming, e-commerce and most recently, artificial intelligence. Amazon has grown to be so successful that it’s now considered to be one of the Big Five companies in the US information technology sector. The other four include Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple.
Founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, Amazon originally established an online marketplace for the selling of books, but it quickly expanded and soon began to sell a variety of different goods and services, including:
- Video games
- Music in a number of different formats
- Video and music streaming service
With their super-fast, reliable delivery subscription service, dubbed Amazon Prime, consumers can expect to receive their goods within two days on purchasing online. In 2018, Bezos announced that this highly-popular service had amassed over 100 million subscribers across the globe.
Known for its exceptional distribution capabilities on a mass scale, it has become the largest online marketplace in the world, measured solely by market capitalisation and overall revenue. But with such a wide spread, successful distribution network throughout the globe, there must be hundreds, if not thousands of Amazon warehouses located globally, and we’ll be telling you exactly how many of them there are together with where they are in the world.
How many Amazon warehouses are there in the world?
There are more than 364 Amazon warehouses (inclusive of fulfillment, distribution and sortation centres) located around the world, with that number set to grow rapidly over the coming years. Also known as fulfillment centres, these warehouses are often located in exceptionally large areas to cater for their overall size.
How big is an Amazon warehouse?
On average, an Amazon warehouse is around 800,000 square feet, giving them the capacity to hire around 1,500 employees. Combining all of the Amazon warehouses globally, this equates to more than 291.2 million square feet of space and over 546,000 employees worldwide.
Where are the Amazon warehouses located?
Amazon warehouses, including distribution, fulfillment and sortation centres, are located across the globe. Where some countries have more Amazon warehouses than others, it’s safe to say that this highly-successful company has established itself in almost every country in the world. In fact, it would probably be easier to name the countries that haven’t had an Amazon warehouse built on their soil.
The countries where Amazon warehouses are located include, but are not limited to:
- United States of America
- United Kingdom
How many Amazon warehouses are in each country?
Amazon has an impressive number of distribution, fulfillment and sortation centres located all over the world, so we’ll be breaking down those numbers for you so you can see exactly how many warehouses there are in each country or continent:
- USA – 231
- Europe (excluding the UK) – 40
- Canada – 15
- Mexico – 2
- Asia – 41
- Australia – 6
- Brazil – 2
What is it like inside an Amazon warehouse?
In order to create and maintain a happy workforce, no matter what season they’re in, the warehouse will be well ventilated in order to retain a comfortable temperature. Often, skylights have been installed in order to give a combination of natural and artificial light. There are even conveyance systems on hand to shuttle products from one side of the building to the other, allowing boxes to go from packing stations to waiting lorries in no time at all.
Are fulfillment centres the only type of warehouse Amazon operates out of?
In short, no. There are also distribution and sortation centres located globally in order to help logistics run as smoothly and as efficiently as possible. The introduction of this network has meant that Amazon can deliver items in an exceptionally short timeframe, helping to retain customers and continue their ongoing satisfaction with the subscription service. Therefore, it’s important that Amazon have these centres in place.
These extra centres will ensure that packages are distributed based on location and delivery speed (will the package be going to an Amazon Prime customer, for example?). They’re also in place to ensure goods are handled and distributed according to a specific item category or whether it’s for seasonal use. There’s also a warehouse dedicated for the distribution of popular items in order to help meet demand.
By dividing these facilities and warehouses, Amazon are able to fulfill all of their customer’s orders, from small products to large items, you’re guaranteed to receive your package in a decent timeframe, all because of Amazon’s well-established, highly-organised distribution network.
