Frequently Asked Questions About Pallet Trucks

Can’t find the answer to your question? Get in touch with our friendly team and we’ll be happy to help!

What is a pallet truck used for?

Also known as a pallet jack or pallet pump, it is a piece of material handling equipment that is often used in warehouse and manufacturing environments to move empty pallets or palletised loads. This turns a time-consuming manual task into a one-person job, improving efficiency and safety.

No, they aren't subject to LOLER (The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998), because these regulations are designed to cover equipment involved with transporting people and goods. Pallet trucks only raise the load sufficiently to clear the ground to allow for horizontal movement, therefore not carrying out a lifting operation. The only exception here is high-lift pallets that lift above 300mm. Instead, they are covered by PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998).

While you don't need a license to use a pallet truck, it is generally advised to undertake some basic level of training to prevent accidents and injuries from occurring.

Pallet trucks and pallet jacks are different names for the same thing. You might also hear people call them pump trucks.
