Can Diesel Forklifts Be Used Indoors?

Can Diesel Forklifts Be Used Indoors?

Diesel forklifts can be used both inside and out. However, for long term use indoors, it’s not always ideal.

For indoor use, there are many alternatives to diesel forklifts, such as electric and LP gas options that are worth considering. LPG options are more eco friendly than diesel, and better for use indoors for short periods of time, while electric options are designed to be used inside and outside, being considered now as dual purpose forklifts.

In this article, we dive more into using diesel forklifts indoors, including health and safety and general best practices.

Health and safety considerations when using diesel forklifts indoors

There’s lots to consider from a health and safety perspective with using diesel forklifts indoors, in fact, fuel based forklifts in general. Technically, they can be used inside for short periods, but it is still not advised in order to keep your environment as safe as possible.

Diesel forklifts produce high levels of emissions, more so than any other type of forklift. They release water vapour, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon particles into the air, reducing air quality. Particularly if used within a contained space, these harmful pollutants can quickly build up, polluting the air, and harming staff’s health.

Modern diesel forklifts have been improved with safety features to reduce harmful pollutants release, but are still not ideal for indoor use. Should you use one as a part of your operation, you should understand and follow the safety guidelines.

It’s usually considered that diesel forklifts are fine used inside for a short period of time, for example, for bringing loads from outside in, but are best for predominantly outdoor use.

Best practices for using diesel forklifts indoors

As per the safety guidelines, there are best practices you can follow to keep your workspace as safe as possible when using diesel forklifts inside.

Ensure proper ventilation

Doors and windows should be left open, so any emissions can escape. This is particularly important in smaller warehouses, as the air quality can become dangerous in such a short space of time.

Monitor air quality

You can buy handheld monitors and even get monitoring sensors installed to monitor the air quality in your space, so you can ensure it’s as clean and safe as possible. There are also dedicated specialists that can help with this, providing monitoring and assessments.

Keep well maintained

Machines receiving regular servicing maintenance are better for indoor use. With attention paid to the exhaust system and filters, it helps reduce emissions. Particularly if using it indoors, it’s important to ensure there is no damage, so that fumes are minimally released and the risk of oil or diesel spillages is reduced.

Benefits to buying diesel forklifts

Although not the best for indoor use, diesel forklifts do have their benefits.

Higher torque

Diesel forklifts are powerful machines, perfect for heavy duty use. They offer much higher torque compared to petrol and electric, making them great for outdoor use in harsh conditions.

Faster refueling

Unlike electric, you don’t have to sit and wait for a charge – simply refill and go. This is great, particularly for operations which rely on a singular forklift. Plus, compared to LPG models, you get more usage per litre, which means all round longer running times.

Longer lifespans

Forklifts in general have an average lifespan of between 10,000 to 20,000 operation hours, which in a typical operation equates to 5-6 years. Diesel forklifts out of LPG and electric usually have the longest lifespan, with an average of between 7-12 years. Of course, they can last longer, provided they receive the right upkeep.

What forklifts are best for indoor use?

Whereas diesel forklifts can be used for indoor use, electric forklifts are by far the best choice. Releasing no emissions, they’re an all-round better option for the environment too.

To recap, diesel can be used, but for long-term use, it’s not recommended. If you do, it’s important to follow safety regulations and monitor the air quality to keep your workspace safe for all.

Electric’s only real letdown is the fact they can’t be refueled quickly and usually offer less power. It’s recommended to have diesel and LPG for outdoor use, and electric for indoor use. Modern forklifts, however, have more advanced batteries and technology, making them a more viable option as part of operations.
