Not every forklift is suited to every application. From the most common counterbalance to more task-specific machinery, there are many different types to consider. One of the most important specifications to get right is fuel type.
Electric, diesel, and LPG forklifts each have their strengths. But the right choice all depends on the requirements of your operation.
So, how do you make the right call? In this article, we break down the key differences between electric, diesel, and LPG forklifts, and explore which fuel type best suits which application.
Electric, diesel, and LPG forklifts explained
Diesel forklifts

Diesel forklifts are the most powerful of the three fuel types. Their engines offer the highest torque and overall performance, making them ideal for lifting the really heavy loads. Heavy duty models are available, capable of handling over 20,000kg.
They are particularly suited for outdoor applications, handling rough terrain (loose or uneven ground) with ease. Diesel models can withstand a greater level of tough conditions, which is why they’re the typical engine choice for rough/all-terrain forklifts.
A well-maintained diesel forklift will typically last between 12,000 and 15,000 operating hours – and in many cases, considerably longer. Demanding low maintenance and more affordable to run than LPG, they’re a strong investment for operations that need a workhorse.
LPG forklifts

LPG, short for Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is one of the most versatile fuel types. LPG forklifts are suitable for both indoor warehousing and outdoor use, making them a flexible option for operations that require a machine to perform across different environments. This makes them ideal for operations that need a machine to unload deliveries and take indoors.
While they can handle rough outdoor conditions, diesel typically has the edge when it comes to heavier lifting in more demanding settings. For loads between 2,000 kg to 7,000 kg, LPG models offer a capable and cost-effective alternative.
LPG forklifts are typically cost-effective to purchase outright, and benefit from low maintenance requirements. The average lifespan ranges between 12,000 to 15,000 operating hours, with well-maintained machines known to reach and exceed 20,000.
Electric forklifts

Electric forklifts are the best fit for indoor operation. Unlike the other types available, they release zero emissions, so are great for safety, keeping air quality in a warehouse or any environment as clean as possible.
Your typical electric forklift can handle between 1,000kg and 8,000kg. Advanced, high-voltage (80V) models are also capable of performing outdoors, delivering power comparable to diesel.
Electric forklifts tend to sit at a higher price point than diesel or LPG, though offer lower running and maintenance costs. With no engine oil to change and fewer components overall, they’re the simplest of the three to maintain, with sufficient batteries designed for fast charging and 24/7 operation. Most electric engines last 10,000-12,000 hours of use, though with the right maintenance, can easily last longer.
How to choose the right fuel type for your operation
There’s a lot to consider when choosing between electric, diesel and LPG. The biggest influence that’ll help your decision is where you’ll be using it. Although all three types can be used inside and out, we recommend the following:
| Electric | Diesel | LPG (Gas) | |
| Indoor | Yes | No | Yes (with good ventilation) |
| Outdoor | Yes | Yes | Yes |
LPG and diesel forklifts aren’t the best fit for indoor use. They can be used, but good ventilation should be ensured, as diesel engines in particular produce higher emissions, stronger odours, and louder noise levels.
Electric forklifts, however, are primarily designed for indoor use. Releasing zero emissions, they are the safest option – very low noise, and keeping the quality of air clean within enclosed spaces.
Other considerations
- Lifting requirements
Think about how much you’ll need the machine to lift. If you need it to handle very heavy loads, diesel is likely your best option. For lighter to medium loads, electric and LPG are both more than capable. Some higher spec electric models may be available that match the same power as diesel, which may be worth exploring if you need heavy lifting capability for indoor, and even outdoor operation.
- Budget
Electric forklifts typically cost more upfront but offer lower running and maintenance costs over time. Diesel and LPG are generally more affordable to purchase, with diesel the cheaper of the two to run.
- Shift patterns
Electric forklifts require charging, so for intensive 24/7 operations, fast-charge capabilities and battery management are worth factoring in. Many modern models have advanced battery capacities, making them suitable for long use, though older models may fall short. Diesel and LPG can be refuelled quickly and turned around faster, which may be more appropriate if this machine is one you’ll be solely relying on without backups.
