What is Thorough Examination and Why is it Important?

At Multy Lift all our engineers are fully trained and qualified to carry out Thorough Examinations on forklift trucks and other material handling equipment. We can provide all legally required certification for your equipment to show compliance with legislative safety regulations. But what exactly is a Thorough Examination and why is it so important for material handling equipment owners and operators?

What is a Thorough Examination?

A Thorough Examination is a regular, systematic and detailed examination of your equipment to check and certify that it is safe and in good working order.

After a Thorough Examination is carried out by a Multy Lift engineer, we will provide you with a complete report, either certifying that your equipment has passed the Thorough Examination or indicating any issues that need to be remedied.

What is checked as part of a Thorough Examination?

For the Thorough Examination procedure, our expert engineers will carry out visual examinations and functional checks for all key parts of the equipment.

There are two separate regulations constituting Thorough Examination for forklift trucks and material handling equipment. These are the LOLER 98 and the PUWER 98. LOLER stands for “Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations”. PUWER stands for “Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulation” which inspects and certifies extra equipment relating to your machine, such as attachments. These are the only regulations supported by the Health and Safety Executive.

For LOLER 98 our engineer looks at lifting/moving parts of your machinery, such as but not limited to, masts, chains, forks and controls to check that they are in working order and completely safe, wheels and tyres are checked for their safety and wear. For PUWER 98, any additional attachments (which do not form an original part of a forklift) i.e. bale clamps, man up cages, carpet booms etc. are checked for safety and compliance.

Why is a Thorough Examination so important?

Firstly, Thorough Examinations are required by law. You need to have the examinations carried out at the required intervals in order to be able to legally use the equipment in your business.

As the checks are so comprehensive and carried out by qualified professionals, you can be sure your equipment is safe to operate and in good working order which in turn prevents downtime and accidents. One of the main purposes of a Thorough Examination is to maintain optimum safety in your workplace.

The detailed report and pass certificate provided at the end of each examination also helps you to keep a record of your equipment’s condition. If any repairs or maintenance are required, each report also details any points which need to be address in order to comply with LOLER and PUWER.
